Playing field – June 2025 update 1

With a new licence in place allowing some public access to the playing field on Headland Road, business has now returned to the topic of a more permanent solution. This has been made possible by a very generous gift of a parcel of land from the landowner of the field next to Welford on Avon School.

To move this forward, a representative of Welford on Avon Parish Council (WPC) had a Zoom meeting with the education and property leads at Warwickshire County Council (WCC) on Thursday 5th June 2025. WCC have committed to explore the land exchange that would see WCC inherit an exclusive space for the school to develop its outdoor curriculum and WPC inherit an exclusive space for its play equipment. Public access to remaining playing field would be under licence.

In principle this was agreed by those present. However, authority for a final decision lies with the councillors elected recently to the County Council. In addition, boundaries must be agreed, for which a site meeting is needed between all parties. And boundaries must be paid for. WCC and WPC are exploring how these costs can be met, including using infrastructure payments from recent developments in the village.

There are a number of elements in play. While these are being worked out, the WPC are pleased that there is at least some limited public access to the playing field.
